This movie has been a staple with our family since first released on video, in fact we have old-fashioned 3 tapes out of the unusual and I have unbiased purchased the dvd, which is outstanding!! The colour and quality are friendly and the narrative and inform overs are a slump serve to glory days of English gentility. My children detached search for this continually and whilst it may not appeal to the “action comix” kid (or adult) it is a masterpiece and is simply redolent with atmosphere. Select it for your kids, gape it time and time again for yourself and give your spirit a consume.

When I first learned of this point to I instantly fell in appreciate with it. When I learned they did many episodes I enjoyed even that great more. Many years later I finally learned unbiased how many episodes they did, and realized I must have missed out on many of them, and was in command shock and dread at all the astounding work that Cosgrove and Hall did. This first single disc DVD is on the feature length episode that Cosgrove and Hall produced. Rob one of my current styles of animation, add some talented (and a few common) British stutter actors, and add the creative talent of Cosgrove and Hall, and give them an curious loveable book, and you bag an titanic amount of Family Fun Time. After you understanding this one feature length episode gain on to your hats. To be released around March of 2005 is the first of about 5 volumes A&E plans to obtain, so that they may be the very first in the market to completely release to the public every single one of the 65 (YES, you heard that proper “65!”) 20 dinky episodes that the talented Cosgrove and Hall company produced. Never before has the public been allowed to hold and understanding in their homes every single episode of this amazing series. The only things in the past that were release on tape were the feature length episode, and about 3 or 4 tapes with 3 episodes each (with 1 or 2 episodes changed out when they were reproduced a couple of times) . It’s repulsive that it took this long to let the public in all this fun (Who’s been hoarding and hiding all these recordings anyway? ) . Thanks finally to A&E for being the first company to salvage the rights (after several others had the rights over the years) to devote all the time and anxiety they are going to do to fetch all the episodes out to the public. YEAH for A&E! So many of us have been longing for such a lengthy amount of time to finally possess every episode. I especially luxuriate in this indicate honest tad bit more than others, as this point to helped bring me out of a black depressing time I went through early one year, when I happened to stumble upon this demonstrate again on a PBS channel, and outrageous and sight by some freak of nature they were airing some of the episodes in the early to mid 90’s.

On to a side comment, I don’t know how someone can give this reveal a awful rating, and then also go on a rant about it having abominable language. What expose were you watching anyway? Unless you’re a shapely uptight paranoid parent who gets offended by everyone else in world, this explain is certainly for everyone. So don’t let any kind of review like that deter you from having any kind of fun. Accelerate, don’t bound, and come by your copies of every single one of these episodes, and launch having a titanic fun time.

I have fond memories of seeing the Just Life Adventure films on the Disney TV present growing up, as well as in re-release in theatres, and this volume contains one of my favorites, Contain COUNTRY. The other 3 films are also very savory, with THE AFRICAN LION being a standout. These restored versions are glowing and really allow you to experience nature’s majesty.

The extras are also quite profitable, especially FILMMAKER’S JOURNAL, which features current interviews with people keen in making these movies. It’s really improbable what these people went through to film these adventures.

These films helped originate my worship of nature as a child. Here’s hoping they can peaceful have that affect on kids today.

The complete Walt Disney “Apt Life Adventures” series is now available on very high quality DVD. Nothing filmed since comes up to these. Capture them all, and sit down with your family for spell-binding entertainment. My vote for the highlight of Volume 3 is “Contain Country”. It is position in Yellowstone National Park, and in addition to the bears, you fetch to survey into the hole of a geyser.

The people who slammed this kids’ film were, guess what? bitter adult Star Wars fans who have refused to leer the saga has moved onto the next generation. This is not a continuation of the live-action films, it is a computer bright interpretation of Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars spirited series, hence the shapely stylized faces and character designs. It’s a huge scheme to accumulate young children, like my nephew who has never seen a Star Wars movie involved in the belief. Face it people, this is a kids’ indicate and always will be. If you want the darker, more realistic side of the saga, wait for the live-action TV series to advance. Relax, and luxuriate in the lighter side of Star Wars once in a while.

So, I saw this originally in the theater. I mean, it’s Star Wars, you have to experience Star Wars in the theater. I can now say I’ve seen every movie in said scheme (going help to ‘77) . I went into it with no preconceived notions about it, only that it was a novel Star Wars movie. I never saw a trailer or anything for this. It was something I started when the prequel came out. I wanted to know nothing about the movies before seeing them.

So, ok, this was impartial an excuse to construct a movie. The situation is cellophane thin. I am actually all proper with that. The action scenes Yell Star Wars, Anakin and the other main characters are fleshed out a microscopic more, and it is all in all worthy fun. It is geared for a younger audience, but so were all the others.

Ahsoka is sizable. Even at her tender age, she is able to hold up with the likes of the Chosen One. Yes, there are obvious characters that don’t necessarily fit in with what most of us watch as the Star Wars universe (Rotta, Ziro) but it was principal for what yarn line there is.

All in all, I enjoyed watching this and YES I do occupy this on DVD. I haven’t been able to rep the series yet on Cartoon Network, but based on the movie (stale storyline and all), it has potential to expand, in a favorable design, the Star Wars Universe.

This is a very rare film, unavailable in the U.S. for several years.

In 1977, Syberberg made a statement during an interview: “I judge in five to ten years, the filmmaking business will shift from the contrivance of the movie theater to the house. People will behold films like they listen to records - on cassettes on a ample wall”. The timescale and medium may be improper, but he was moral about the trend.

At more than seven hours, ‘Our Hitler’ is an ideal example of a film which is virtually unwatchable in a theater setting, but perfect for the home environment, where the action can be paused and restarted at will, and spread over several evenings, if distinguished.

Syberberg’s style is unmistakeable, combining front-projected images, stage props, tableaux and puppets, overlaid with Wagner’s music and long monologues. Daunting? Not at all. The key to appreciating this incredible film is to ride your viewing. Contemplate more in terms of atmosphere rather than action, notify rather than residence. A knowledge of German history and culture is useful, but not important. Honest sit assist and allow the film to to enter your mind.

The twin DVD plot includes the four parts of the film, plus fragments of a documentary produced when the film was first shown in Recent York. The documentary is derived from a badly-deteriorated VHS copy, and is riddled with sound dropouts and tracking errors, but is level-headed exciting. The package also includes a fifty-page guide to the film (which is handy for those of us who can’t observe Thomas Mann when we leer him) . The booklet includes reviews by Susan Sontag and Anton Kaes.

The film itself is available in the English or German versions. The chosen language determines the language of the subtitles and some of the voiceovers.

I saw this film many years ago, on British television. I’ve been looking for it ever since. It’s marvellous that it should be available on DVD at last. The other two films in this trilogy (’Ludwig - Requiem für einen jungfräulichen König’ and ‘Karl May’) have unbiased been released on DVD in Germany. I hope these titles will soon be available in the U.S.

Susan Sontag called this film “the most wonderful film I’ve ever seen”. While this may seem hyperbolic, it isn’t. This is an astonishing film, and I completely understand Sontag’s adoration of it. This is a intelligent film, one that has had me thinking for days about it. I watched it over 2 nights, and there’s so worthy in it and so mighty to steal in that I’m planning on renting it again or perhaps purchasing it. Despite its nearly 7 1/2 hour length, there isn’t one tiring, moment in it. I only watched it over 2 nights because I had to go to sleep. If I had had the time to gaze the whole thing in one sitting, I would have done so without thinking. I haven’t felt this glued to the shroud in I don’t know how long.

The film is absolutely mesmerizing. This film has been unavailable for many, many years, and this is the first time it’s been offered on home video. The director, Hans Jurgen Syberberg, had posted the film on his website, but watching it on a TV or projected is the best contrivance to spy it. The film is operatic, theatrical, mind bending, black, haunting, aroused, depressing, and honest about everything else you can mediate of. The 4th fragment is a petite plain (the first 30 minutes of section four is one long monologue), but after this monologue is concluded, the film takes off again to a lovely conclusion.

Never does the film feel padded. Like in Wagner’s substantial operas (Wagner figures prominently here), a film like this needs to be long to direct its fable, and that should be respected. The actors throughout the film give agreeable performances, and the film is one of the most idea provoking films that I’ve seen in current memory.

It is arresting to price that this film, despite its colossal length, cost a mere $500,000 dollars and only took 20 days to shoot (even though the pre-production period was longer than most films) . The DVD has an good booklet with many essays on the film, but the most (and justifiably) well-known essay is the one written by the ample, gradual Susan Sontag, who championed this film and who should be congratulated for her insight and dedication to this filmic masterpiece.

THE ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN was intended as something of a ‘comeback’ film for Warner Bros. resident ‘bad boy’, combining the brave elements of ‘ROBIN HOOD’ and ‘THE SEA HAWK’ with Flynn’s well-established (by 1948) reputation as a hell-raising womanizer. Unfortunately, the color production was not a box office hit, but the silly adventure is today embraced by his many fans as one of his best roles!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Adventures of Don Juan! Click Here

It was not an easy film to make; despite Flynn’s initial attempts to be punctual and a cooperative, he eventually ‘fell off the wagon’, and his carousing and frequent disappearances stretched the filming out by months, forcing frequent reshooting. Director Vincent Sherman, cinematographer Elwood Bredell, and editor Alan Crosland often had to ‘cut-and-paste’ snippets of many takes to carry out a decent performance from the star, and careful lighting had to be obsolete to play down the increasingly clear effects of the star’s hedonistic lifestyle. (The closing scene, featuring then-wife Nora Eddington, was shot nearly a year before the remainder of the film, and the change in the Flynn’s physical appearance is clearly evident.) At 38, the star, who always hated being called a ‘pretty boy’ (to the extent that his home had few mirrors) was aging snappily, and badly.

All this being said, Flynn tried to give the film his best he could. It had been a landmark film for his friend/mentor John Barrymore, in the first Warners’ film with sound, employed for music and special effects only, in 1926 (THE JAZZ SINGER would introduce ‘talkies’ a year later) . It reunited him with friend and frequent costar Alan Hale, who, at 56, was unexcited a common character actor, and whose son, Alan Jr., was starting to form his sign around town (he would eventually be best known as the Skipper in ‘Gilligan’s Island’) . The script for DON JUAN passed through many hands, including uncredited support by William Faulkner and Robert Florey, with the extinguish result being marvelously amusing, tongue-in-cheek, and swashbuckling, to boot! The glean, by the legendary Max Steiner, became an instant classic, and would be reused, years later, in George Hamilton’s ZORRO, THE Happy BLADE. This was a film which, despite Errol Flynn’s self-destructive lifestyle, had enough talent alive to to collected stand up as one of the better films of the 1940s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Adventures of Don Juan! Click Here

The space involves roué Don Juan, tossed out of England after breaking up a ‘diplomatic’ wedding (a VERY droll scene), returning home to Spain to derive rank Duke de Lorca (the sublimely detestable Robert Douglas) controlling traditional King Phillip, and taxing the population to advance starvation, with only the delicate Queen Margaret standing in his design. Flynn hastily dispatches a de Lorca press gang, earning the Count’s hatred, and the Queen’s attention…and Don Juan finds himself truly falling in care for, for the first time, with the youthful monarch (played by the gorgeous Viveca Lindfors) . Assigned as a fencing master at the Academy, the legendary lover draws the ire of the Queen by stating his feelings for her, then is manipulated into another disastrous diplomatic blunder, spicy, of course, another woman. On the rush, he discovers de Lorca’s ultimate plot (manipulating the Crown into war), and with the assist of the students of the Academy, he must assign the King and Queen.

Featuring a enormous early appearance by Raymond Burr (as a de Lorca henchman), and a stirring final duel between Flynn and Douglas (expanded from the 1926 version, and featuring an astounding climactic stairway jump, performed by stuntman and future ‘Tarzan’ Jock Mahoney), THE ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN is a gloriously adventuresome romp. Sadly, it didn’t effect Flynn’s flagging career, but it certainly has earned a plot among his classic films!

“The Adventures of Don Juan” was Warner Brothers’ last grand investment in Errol Flynn. Their resident abominable boy had long ago obsolete up any goodwill he might have had with the studio — goodwill based primarily on Flynn’s power at the box office. But in the tedious 1940s, Errol Flynn’s star was on the wane, and the studio was beginning to recall a hard and skeptical study at their one-time box office bonanza.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Adventures of Don Juan! Click Here

In an attempt to rekindle some of the ragged fire, Warner Bros. produced “The Adventures of Don Juan,” in which Flynn plays the title role. His Don Juan is world-weary, a man for whom all the loves and swordfights and scandals are beginning to wear him a bit thin. But the most compelling aspect of this Don Juan’s character is his sense of humor. Flynn brings a funny, tongue-in-cheek element to the character that is extraordinarily attractive.

The film is lush and well-appointed. There are times when Flynn shows the effects of years of hard drinking and womanizing, but for the most fraction he is strikingly blooming. Stunt doubles were broken-down extensively for him, particularly in the final duel scene. In the shot where Don Juan leaps down a long staircase and lands on top of the villain, future “Yancey Derringer” star Jock Mahoney performed the leap.

“Don Juan” did poorly in the United States and fabulously well in Europe. Its frosty reception at home convinced Warner Brothers that Flynn was no longer a bankable commodity, and considerably less money was spent on his films in the few years he had left under his contract.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Adventures of Don Juan! Click Here

But in the intervening years, “The Adventures of Don Juan” has earned a spacious following among Errol Flynn admirers and movie buffs as well. It is a immense, comical and thoroughly palatable jaunt with the King of the Swashbucklers, and one that should not be missed.

Two kids in high school, one a girl named Yukino Miyazawa who is a hard working student because she loves the praise and attention it gets her, and the other a boy, named Souichirou Arima, who comes along and takes it away from her, by being the perfect boy. Of course, this pisses her off and that’s when the fun starts.

Yukino does all she can to site her revenge, but what happens when he tells her he loves her? And what happens when she realizes she might adore him too?

The chronicle is somewhat realistic in the region, there are no aliens or robots here, fair treasure, abhor, need and friendships. The artwork, and music, changes, depending on the inside thoughts of the characters and whose point of opinion we happen to be watching. Sometimes it looks like something out of a sunless and white film and other times it makes Southpark peer like a classic! But it made me laugh and, a couple of times, almost made me bawl. The characters are all flawed, yet sometimes very strong and very trusty. While they sometimes score confused, they don’t act monotonous nor do they honest let things come by worse while they direct. They charge ahead and try to change things for the better, even if things sometimes derive really messy.

There are lots of recaps and flashbacks. Also, the reason I dropped a point was because there is no closure. There better be another anime series in the making, otherwise I’ll have procure the manga to figure out what happens next!

OK for males and females, so guys, prefer it too!

His and Her Circumstances is an absolutely extraordinary series…yet the addictive storyline only leads up to an emtpy wasted shell of an ending. I do highly recomend this anime. It truly is one of the best of all time. The artwork and character development exceed most anime. However the characters are so likeable that they leave you hungering in the slay for more information. Especially Arima….This character specifically captures my sympathy and attention. I feel the director and producers should have elaborated more on the sage. Hopefully there will be a sequel series of some sort…so the cliffhanger will be met with a resolution. I feel like the directors worked hard but the at the raze objective got completely sluggish and showed bits and peices of the manga in order to invent the last episode. The sage was astounding, but the animation for the region was at times annoying. I did not luxuriate in the episode done entirely in crayon or the broad amount of flashbacks and recaps in the other episodes. The series even dedicated an entire episode and a half on recaps. I feel as though that is a astronomical extinguish. After a while you derive sick of hearing the proper same information again and again. I recomend this series for a person who enjoys romance but doesn’t mind loose ends and repetition.

What a gargantuan deal - all three Bawl films for one indecent brand! The unusual Shout basically resuscitated the plain slasher genre in the 90’s, with its stand-out cast, site twists, and the fact that it never took itself too seriously. Cry 2, did an fine job of keeping the series alive without looking like a pathetic cash-in on the success of the fresh. It was well notion out and wasn’t rushed. The third installment almost went a puny too far for me (but hey, its spoofing slasher films and usually by the time you hit the second sequel a series has gone plot too far anyway) . All three films are clever, scary, and even droll. You definitely do not want to miss out on this spot!

I have owned Weep since it came out on VHS, then I purchased the other two when they came out on VHS. I am slowly changing all of my VHS to DVD and I have been checking AMAZON.COM for the best DVD deal. This 3 pack was a rob, I only paid $12 total with S&H and unlike many movie box deals each movie has it’s absorb case and they approach in the Cry box station. I assume this is a mammoth deal to obtain all 3 movies and for them each to have their beget DVD box. The quality is gargantuan I treasure these movies and have for a long time. Tall buy AMAZON.COM!!

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) - The legendary stutter between rival divas Bette Davis and Joan Crawford fuelled the fire both on- and off-screen in Director Robert Aldrich’s Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Its Immense Guignol fable of an aging ex-vaudeville child star (Davis) waging a psychotic reign of alarm over her crippled ex-movie star sister (Crawford) became a wreck hit and nabbed Davis her 10th Academy Award nomination for her acid portrayal of the title role. Nominated for an impressive five Academy Awards (winning for Best Costume Compose), Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? is a mirthful masterpiece of the macabre.

Oh yeah! I’ve been waiting quite awhile to partake in this slab of metaphysical weirdness! Needless to say, “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? ” is everything you’ve heard and more. People went abet and forth, frothing at the mouth in anticipation of a Freddy Krueger versus Jason Voorhees duel in “Freddy vs. Jason,” but if you want the loyal deal all you need do is check out Joan Crawford versus Bette Davis. By all accounts sworn enemies in right life, “Baby Jane” finally brought the two powerhouses together for a knock down, chase out fight of narrative proportions in a movie that is so utterly insane it really does defy description. Every thing I will write about the film below won’t do it justice. I imagine this movie is a lot like the Taj Mahal or the Astronomical Canyon–you can seek at pictures and say “Wow! That looks astounding,” but a two dimensional photographic image won’t give you the burly enact. You’ve got to go there to devour such natural wonders, and you’ll have to rent or win this DVD to relish the wonder of Bette Davis on autocamp as a outmoded child star grown up into, well, read on and perceive.

Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) had it all when she was a child. A hit song insured that great audiences turned out to peep her construct on the stage. Unfortunately, runt Jane suffered from an ego the approximate size of Wyoming, an ego that resulted in temper tantrums with her parents and her sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) . Eventually her raging sense of self torpedoed her career even as her sister’s began to waft when the film industry blossomed. Jane Hudson sank into obscurity, liquor, cigarettes, and a repugnant case of mental illness that greatly accelerated when a tragic accident do Blanche in a wheelchair for life. Now the two sisters live together in a decrepit house reminiscing about the used days. Well, at least Blanche reminisces. Jane Hudson spends her time stalking around the house in pancake makeup and a gossamer gown now tattered and spattered, spewing sarcasm and veiled threats at her sister, the neighbors, and the maid who arrives once a week to look how things are going. Hudson mild thinks it’s possible to resurrect her long wearisome celebrity if only she can figure out a map to rid herself of the onerous burden that is Blanche. Obviously, she finds a contrivance. She begins tormenting her sister by placing disgusting things in her food and making her sound crazy to outsiders. When that fails to work quick enough, she resorts to out and out physical violence.

With Blanche under lock and key in a bedroom upstairs, Jane begins the rigorous training all performers undertake to return to greatness. She hires a down and out musician by the name of Edwin Flagg (Victor Buono) to tumble by the house for protest and dance lessons. Now the exact insanity starts as Hudson rapid devolves aid into her childhood persona. She prances about the house singing her passe musical numbers, giving it her all without realizing how incredibly grotesque the plan of an elderly woman imitating a child is. Flagg thinks Jane is crackers, and he’s legal more than he could possibly know, but a paycheck is a paycheck. Until he finds out what is going on in a bedroom upstairs, that is. Faced with the distasteful presence of the local constabulary and the probability of a lot of probing questions about what’s been going on between the two sisters, Hudson packs Blanche in the car for a whisk to the beach. I won’t spoil the conclusion of this cult classic for you, but let’s unprejudiced say a startling revelation at the seashore proves to be the straw that finally pushes unpleasant Jane Hudson over the edge. The denouement is upsetting, the sort of ending that has you putting your hand to your mouth in a “oh my” gesture.

“Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? ” is a masterpiece of casting, directing, and performing. The notion of putting these two lionesses of the silver mask in the same portray was a stroke of genius on the portion of director Robert Aldrich, although many questioned his sanity for making such a decision. Wouldn’t the two actresses sail each other apart on state? Apparently not, but there were a few confrontations–including a thrown aid and some dependable kicks delivered in a clear scene–and sniping that hinted at the turmoil unbiased under the surface. Aldrich moved forward, crafting a film that is both claustrophobic in its spot pieces and one that uses the dismal and white photography to vast advantage. The film really succeeds, however, because of Bette Davis. She blows Joan Crawford out of the water in this movie, although to be ravishing Davis from the begin had the meatier role. Her garish appearance and screeching whine scream the chills to the nth degree, and her progressive decline into total insanity is unpleasant and absolutely convincing. Davis was nominated for an Academy Award for her disturbing portrayal of Jane Hudson, and rightfully so. She should have won. I’ve seen hundreds if not thousands of fright films, and Davis’s Jane Hudson ranks as one of the most disturbing characters I have witnessed in any of them.

Sadly, the DVD doesn’t give us grand in the device of extras aside from cast and crew biographies and a few pages of text describing the production. Then again, it’s unlikely we would hear about the movie from the important figures enthusiastic in its production since they are all long dreary. Perhaps a commentary track with a film historian or a similar person could have been set aside on the disc; I know of other films that do this. Anyway, if you haven’t seen this film you’ve got to hurry, not promenade, to procure a copy. It’s that well-behaved, it’s that disturbing, and it’s that memorable.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), aged Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me yell.

I opinion it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a tremulous young boy star-struck by a illustrious explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become snappy friends, and whisper to one day move to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they prefer their dream home and fix it up, hoping to beget it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through ancient age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a delighted marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s hurt when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers halt in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and disappear to Paradise Falls. A broken-down balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of luminous balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a fat, gallant kid trying to gain a scouting badge.

After landing in Paradise Falls, the feeble man and the diminutive boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a mountainous rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of end calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his shaded mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by radiant hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole modern world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, corpulent of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Net another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to invent an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster involving movie. But in the meantime, they’re calm putting out toothsome involving movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety archaic man. It’s a charming, fun shrimp adventure sage with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet microscopic anecdote about loss and worship.

As a child, the jumpy Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared savor of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, proceed into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a sincere estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an alive to, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the run. Abominable kid was unbiased trying to procure an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle streak to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a stout emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious worn man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the stale guy is very familiar to Carl — and to select Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as current as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty obsolete coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can be pleased Carl’s fancy for his lost wife, and his unimaginative realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they exhibit all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing ancient together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy near to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of expansive dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Seek Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Cold! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an former airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and positive to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is positive to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special look. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I care for you”) and act the procedure dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to earn shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of uncommon stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable enchanting shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to yell potentially outrageous baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously captivating, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can relish. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!
